Principal's Message

Message from the Principal: Brother Eric Ali-- When guiding our children toward proper Islamic character, we must remember that part of being a wise teacher or parent is being kind and gentle with our children. During the time of the Prophet (saw), a Bedouin urinated in the masjid. Immediately the Prophet’s companions rushed toward the man to beat him. But the Prophet (saw) told them to leave him alone. After the man finished urinating, the Prophet (saw) told him, “Verily, filth and urine are not permitted in these masjids. Indeed, it is for the remembrance of Allah.” The Messenger said to his companions, “I was sent to make things easy, and I was not sent to make things difficult.” And he poured a bucket of water over the urine. Even though our children were raised in Islam, eventually they will have to choose to be Muslims. Let’s help make the proper decision easy for them.-- Al-Madinah School: 1635 South Saint Andrews Place, Los Angeles, California 90019-- madina@pacbell.net (1-323) 296-5961

The Prophet is our Best Example when Disciplining

The Prophet (saw) is our best example when it comes to disciplining our children.

Anas ibn Malik said, "The Prophet, (saw), had the best disposition among people. One day he sent me on an errand and I said, 'By Allah, I will not go,' but it was in my mind that I would do as the Prophet had ordered me.

I went until I saw some children playing in the street. Then the Prophet (saw)  came and saw me and he caught me by the back of my neck from behind. When I looked at him, he was smiling, and he said, 'Unays (Anas' nickname), did you go where I asked you to go?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, yes, I am going.'"

Did you read the part where Anas said, "I will not go" when the Prophet (saw) asked him to do something? There was no pulling out the belt or searching for a stick to let Anas know who's the boss around here. Let us aspire to be patient, kind, and tolerant when our children exhibit their shortcomings.

Learn about the importance of patience and  how to develop patience when disciplining your child. Read Grandma Jeddah's e-book: Reaching Patience: A Muslim Mother's Guide to Self-Control when Disciplining

Give Your Child Your Time By Grandma Jeddah

Give Your Child Your Time

By Grandma Jeddah

There is no way around it . . . you MUST find time to spend with your child on a regular basis.  What is one of the main jobs of psychologists and psychiatrist? They listen to what a person’s problems are. They try to develop a relationship with the person so the person will be willing to express their inner thoughts and feelings. You have one advantage over the mental health professionals--you are the most important and significant person in your child’s life. Your child actually wants you to know how he feels and what upsets him. He has an emotional attachment to you.

Giving your child time doesn’t necessarily mean buying him expensive gifts or taking him to endless outings—although gifts and trips can be quite beneficial. One of the best ways you can give your child your time is by making a habit of stopping what you’re doing and looking at him when he has something to say to you. Give him your sincere attention. Let him know you care about his feelings, his happiness, his sadness and his concerns.
