Assalamu Alaikum Mothers,

Soon school will be out and your children will be home most of the day. If you are concerned that they will have little or no structured time at home which might lead to increased discipline problems, Grandma Jeddah has some suggestions.   Try to be proactive this summer to help minimize discipline problems in your home.  Here is a courtesy reminder of how you can start summer off right for you and your children, insha'Allah.

Please visit Grandma Jeddah's website and go to the Ask Grandma Jeddah and Grandma Jeddah's Tips pages. You will find loads of valuable parenting help on those pages that give you tips on managing those exasperating tantrums to handling kids with ADHD.  And don't forget about the Newsletter Archives page.  Grandma Jeddah has compiled all of her previous newsletters in the archives for your review. Some of the topics you will find in the archives are gentle ways to encourage your child to fast (Ramadan is coming soon) to controlling your strong-willed child.

The page that most mothers seem to take great benefit from is the Parenting Support page. On this page Grandma Jeddah has gathered parenting and discipline websites, articles, videos, audio recordings and much more.  All of these resources are there for you. Please take advantage of them to help you start off this summer with a more pleasant and manageable household for you and your children,  insha'Allah.

Summertime Science Boredom Blaster By: Grandma Jeddah

“I’m bored!”  “There’s nothing to do!”  No parent wants to hear these common phrases spurt from their child’s mouth. With school almost out and several months ahead with free time, you might hear them often. Of course you can’t be, and shouldn’t be, the sole means of entertainment for your children.  But you can guide them and show them ways of how to entertain themselves. One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is the ability to self-direct himself when he’s discontented.   This can help prevent him from teasing his younger brother to alleviate his boredom and get your attention—all be it negative attention.
Teach your kids this never-fail-to-please science experiment. All you need are two cooking ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard right now. Once you show your kids how to perform the experiment, they’ll ask you again, and again, if they can do it on their own.
X-ray Vision Volcano
¼ cup baking soda
½ cup vinegar
1 drinking bottle 24oz. with label removed
1 baking dish

Set drinking bottle on baking dish
Pour baking soda into bottle
Hold bottle steady
Pour vinegar in bottle
Watch your volcano explode!
On their own, have children add other household ingredients: dish soap, food coloring salt etc.

Keep Them Busy this Summer By: Grandma Jeddah

What have you planned for your kids this summer?  If you haven’t already, now is a good time to get started. One way to maintain proper discipline in your home is to keep your kids busy.  Having constructive activities throughout the summer can help avoid excessive arguing and fighting among siblings.  It can also prevent them from getting involved in mischievous activities in order to alleviate their boredom.
In the next few blogs, I’ll mention a couple of fun and entertaining activities you can get your children involved in.  You can do them all in your home, and they cost little or no money.   The main ingredients are you, your kids and a smile.
Home Olympics
Home Olympics is a fantastic game to play with your 7-year-olds and up.  It helps them stay in shape while they remain in the house during those scorching summer days.
Have your child choose a day from the end of the month to hold the Home Olympics. Write the date down on the calendar.  You can even make lively posters to remind everyone in the home of the big day.
Have your children practice the below athletic routines regularly 3 – 5 times a week.  This will strengthen their muscles so they can be in top shape for the big event at the end of the month.
These are the activities your children will do, insha’Allah or you can choose your own.

1.      In her bedroom, jump 50 Jumping jacks.
2.      In the hallway, do 20 push-ups.
3.      In the kitchen, run in place 50 times.
4.      In the second bedroom, perform 20 sit-ups.
5.      In the dining room, dip 10 leg squats.

Time your children at the end of all five games.  Each day they should try to beat their previous record.
On the day of the Home Olympics, decorate your home for the special event with balloons and streamers if you like.  After the games have been played, have a small party or special treats available for all Home Olympics participants. Everyone is a winner, because they compete against their own previous scores not one another.

Go for the fun!
