Do You have an ANGRY Teen? (By Grandma Jeddah)

Excerpt From--

I’m STRESSED!
Stress Help for
Muslim Teens and Youth

By Grandma Jeddah

I Feel Angry
Your teacher just gave you a “D” on your history report! You know you deserved a better grade, and now you feel like telling her off.

It’s not easy controlling your emotions at times like this. But the reward for being patient and finding more positive and Islamic ways of expressing your frustrations is well worth the effort. There is great benefit in striving to be known as one who has patience. This can only be accomplished by developing a consistent record of being patient during hardship and trials.
There are many sites on the internet that you can read which will give suggestions on how to be more assertive when you feel you’ve been mistreated. Be sure to look them up after your reading. When you have acceptable ways of expressing your dissatisfaction, you won’t have to rely on your inappropriate expressions.

Here are encouraging words from Quran and hadith on how to manage moments of anger. You will also discover the many rewards and benefits of trying your best to be patient when someone does something to you that gets you fuming.

1.    Two men disputed with each other in the presence of the Messenger of Allah and the nose of one of them became swollen because of extreme anger. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “I know of some words that if he said them, what he feels will go away, [the words are] I seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Satan.' '' (Bukhari)

2.    Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet (saw) counseled a man who asked for his advice and told him three times “Don’t get angry.” (Bukhari) According to scholars, this means don’t act upon your anger, as everyone gets angry.

3.    According to hadith, The Prophet (saw) said: When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down. (Abu Dawud)

4.    Narrated Abu Musa “Some people asked the Prophet (saw), “Whose Islam is the best? i.e. (who is a very good Muslim?) He replied, “One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands. (Bukhari) Know that you might be
Accountable on the Day of Judgment for the way in which you treat others.

5.    According to hadith, The Prophet (saw) said that Allah has said: “O son of Adam! If you remained patient restraining yourself and expecting my reward at the initial shock, I will not be happy without rewarding you with Jannah.”

6.    We all desire companionship at some time or another. We are also sometimes in need of others’ assistance. In Quran 2:153 Our Lord informs us: “Allah is with the patient.” What greater companion can one have?  People sometimes let us down. They may fail us and at times not have the means or ability to help us.  Allah, on the other hand, is completely Self-Sufficient.  What a blessing to have Allah as our Companion, Maintainer and Provider.

7.    The Creator of the heavens and the earth has given us a formula for finding solutions to our tribulations. And part of the solution is having patience. Allah says in Quran 2:45: “And seek help through patience and prayer.”

When you feel you’re at your wits end with your parents’ demands your friend’s rude and hurtful remarks, seek help for your troubles with patience and prayer.

8.    To be loved is a warm and comfortable feeling. But what about the enormous blessing of being loved by Allah, Glory be to Him the Most High! Quran 3:146 says, “And Allah loves the patient." What an honor . . . to be loved by The Most High! Another beautiful hadith about Allah’s love goes as follows:

The Prophet (saw) said: “When Allah, Glory be to Him the Most High, loves someone, He calls Jibreel and says, (Oh Jibreel!) Verily, I love such and such a person, so love him!)’ ”

And Allah names that person and then Jibreel loves that person. Then Jibreel calls out to all the angels of the heavens and he says, “Allah loves so and so, so love him!” And so all the angels love him. And then Allah places pleasure in the hearts of the people towards this person!”

According to hadith, The Prophet (saw) said, “. . .  no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience." (Bukhari and Muslim)

A Tip on Learning to Control Your Temper when Disciplining

A Tip on Learning to Control Your Temper when Disciplining
Quran 2: 183
O Ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint.
A common problem many mothers write in to Grandma Jeddah about is how to control their temper with their children.  These mothers are already on the road to improvement, because they’ve taken the first step, which is realizing that they need to change or improve their parenting methods. Here are a few pointers on how to help yourself maintain self-control when disciplining your children:
·         Learning how to be patient with your children takes practice.  Remember that no one is perfect, but practice does help one to improve.  So make a conscious effort to improve.
·         Think about how you would want to be treated if you were your child.
·         Read about and learn about the ways The Prophet (SAW) dealt with people.  Use him as your example.
·         Fast.  Although not eating can sometimes put one on edge, it also has a calming effect.  We are often more subdued when our stomach is not full. In addition, when fasting we are encouraged to avoid conflict and argumentation. Most of us are familiar with the hadith that says, if somebody should fight or argue with you, you should say, ‘I am fasting.’
Even though Ramadan is over we still have many opportunities to receive the blessings and reward of fasting.  Of course the 6 days of Shawwal are encouraged.  Also, Mondays and Thursdays are
recommended days for fasting.  The three days during the middle of the lunar month are suggested, as well. Use these days to help you get the reward of fasting and gain better self-control, insha’Allah.

Be a Very Good Muslim to Your Children by: Grandma Jeddah

Narrated Abu Musa “Some people asked Allah’s Apostle, “Whose Islam is the best? i.e. (who is a very good Muslim?"He replied, “One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands. (Bukhari)

As mothers, we are over our children.  We are responsible for raising them. And they are obligated to obey us, unless we command them to do wrong. How many times have we heard of the one who is in charge taking advantage of the one he is in charge of?
It is easy to take out our frustrations, bad day or other problems on our children . . . they are helpless, weak and dependent upon us. But during our times of troubles, we must remember that they have a right on us.  On the Day of Judgment, no one will be concerned about their mother, father, sister or brother.  Everyone will try to save themselves. We don’t want our children to be of those who will take from our good deeds because we mistreated them.
When correcting your child for misbehavior, be certain you are giving them their rights.  Learn the methods of discipline that The Prophet (SAW) used with his family and others.  He used gentle means of persuasion, being a good example, and kindness.

Parental Patience: A Key to Instruction By: Grandma Jeddah

Your five-year-old son has just had a meltdown.  He wanted you to take him with you to his older brother’s basketball practice.   You refused because it was after school and you knew he needed a nap because he’d been up late last night.  Little sleep equals a short temper for your little one.
And that’s just what he had—a short temper.  He started his rampage of kicking the door against the wall and flailing like he was in a pool swimming backwards.
How can a mother who wants to give up hitting and shouting control this type of behavior?  The first thing to understand is that children are going through a learning process.  They must be taught how to behave.  This doesn’t mean you simply let them know their behavior is unacceptable. It also involves showing and explaining to them other ways to actually solve their problem.
Some children take longer than others to learn how to control themselves.  This is where patience comes in on the parent’s part.  When a child seems to be unresponsive to suggested solutions to his problem, don’t give up.  Continue directing him.

Teach Emotion Words for Better Discipline By: Grandma Jeddah

One way to help your child learn how to control his sad, angry and unhappy feelings is by teaching him emotion words to explain how he feels.  Some children, such as those with ADHD, learning deficits or Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD’s) truly don’t know how to express their feelings in words.  In these situations, you must teach them the words for certain feelings and also how to express the words to others. This concept may be difficult for the average person to comprehend.  The average person might wonder, how can someone not know how to verbally let others know they are feeling sad or happy?
Certain children have language impairments and social interaction difficulties that cause them to misunderstand the normal cues that signify emotions.   Children with autism, ADHD and other conditions may fall into this category.  They are indeed different than the average functioning child.  Knowing this, can help parents alter their discipline methods so they are more suitable for their particular child.

Teach the Prophet's Advice When Angry By: Grandma Jeddah

Teach your child how the Prophet (saw) suggested we should behave when angry.  Use this as a means of assisting her in coming up with her own solutions.
Narrated AbuDharr: The Apostle of Allah (saw) said to us: When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down.   (Tirmidhi Hadith 5114)
This hadith is so befitting regarding situations that lead us to becoming angry.  Often times when we get upset, we become destructive and hostile.  This type of behavior becomes less possible when we’re sitting or lying down.
Along with learning alternative behaviors to acting out her anger, your child also needs to know what can help diminish her anger. You probably already know the old saying: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.  Well, this saying plays ever so true when it comes to cooling your child’s temper down.
Adults need outlets that will allow them to relax and gather their resolve and continue on their journey in this life.  Children are no different.  They need a break sometimes.  Teach them ways of managing their stress.
Do you want to show your child a wonderfully easy way to feel better when she’s under pressure? Teach her to exercise when she’s at her wits end.  When she exercises, natural chemicals are released from her brain that actually help her feel better.
Don’t be misinformed; exercise doesn’t have to be dull and monotonous.  Get the basketball out and let your daughter play a game of basketball with her brother.  If there’s a punching bag around, let her give it a few punches.  Pull out the jump rope from the toy box and let her jump her troubles away.  How about a little belly dance. The exercise possibilities are endless.  Together, you and your daughter can enjoy the process of selecting the types of exercise activities she takes most pleasure in.  Make a list of the exercises.  Post them up on the refrigerator, bedroom door or somewhere prominent.  When your child gets into one of her aggressive moods, remind her to check her “Stress Relief” list to help calm down.

Anger Help when Disciplining

Your toddler spills the milk in the refrigerator right after you told him he couldn't have any.  Your 12-year-old slaps his 5-year-old  brother after you scolded the 12-year-old about teasing his younger brother. You're already in a bad mood because the toilet backed up and you had to clean the spill. And now . . . (you fill in the rest).
Is it truly possible to remain patient with your kids when you're having one of those horrible, everything-is-going-wrong days?
Remember what the Prophet (saw) said about how to protect yourself from becoming angry: It is reported that Ubayy bin Ka`b said, "Two men disputed with each other in the presence of the Messenger of Allah and the nose of one of them became swollen because of extreme anger. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said,
(I know of some words that if he said them, what he feels will go away, 'I seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Satan.')''
Along with the above words, remember in general to ask Allah to help you get better at being patient.  For Allah is the one who grants patience to whom He wants.

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: The Prophet (saw) said, “. . . Allah will give him patience and no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience. . .”
(Bukhari, Muslim)

6 Inspiring Jewels on Remaining Patient with our Kids by: Grandma Jeddah

We all have our moments.  You finally get a chance to go to the bathroom and no sooner do you close the door than you hear a little fist pounding on the bathroom door, "I have to use it."
You remind your "strong-willed" 12-year-old to put away his basket of clothes.  "I'm not doing it," he responds.
When our children do things or respond to us in ways that make us want to lash out at them, that's the time for us to withhold our actions rather than act upon our emotions.  Hitting our children during fits of anger is not allowed in our religion, according to religious scholars.  One way to help us control our anger and try to become more patient is by reflecting on passages from Quran and Hadith that encourage us to be patient and tell us of the rewards of those who are patient. Here are six reminders from Quran and Hadith on the benefits of being patient.

1.   You who believe! Endure and be more patient . . .” (3:200)
2.   And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun (the patient)".  (2:155)
3. "And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives, that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah.'' (42:43)

4Seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer). Truly, Allah is with As-Sabirun (the patient).'' 2:153)
5. "And surely, We shall try you till We test those who strive hard (for the Cause of Allah) and As-Sabirun (the patient)'' (47:31)
6. Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (ra) reported that: Certain people of the Ansar asked the Messenger  of Allah (saw) and he gave to them; then they again asked him and he gave to them until all what he possessed was exhausted. Then the Prophet (saw) said, "Whatever wealth I have, I will not withhold from you. Whosoever would be chaste and modest; Allah will keep him chaste and modest and whosoever would seek self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whosoever would be patient, Allah will give him patience, and no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience".
(Bukhari and Muslim).
