Temper Tantrums: Guidelines for Parents

The Muslim Child’s Temper Tamer By: Grandma Jeddah

The Muslim Child’s Temper Tamer
By Grandma Jeddah
Do you have one of those hard-to-manage kids?  I mean the really challenging ones. Like the four-year-old who stops drops and rolls when you don’t give him a second serving of cookies.  Or the nine-year-old who shouts and stomps through the house like Paul Bunyan through the forest when you tell him he can’t get on the computer because he left his homework at school.
What is a mother to do when she sees her child is completely on another planet as far as controlling himself is concerned?  And listening to your requests during these emotional outbursts—well . . . let’s not go there.
But, no---really.  What do you do when you have a child that is prone to temper tantrums?  Well, Grandma Jeddah has eight successful tips on how to tame your child’s temper.
The first tip is to make sure you are a good example of how to deal appropriately with anger.  Ohhhhh. . . booooy, you might be saying to yourself cynically.  But hey, that’s where it starts—with you.  Now that’s not to say that all children who lack self-control have parents who throw tantrums.  What this means is that you are your child’s primary teacher.  They are dependent upon you to show them how to behave.  One of the best ways people learn is by imitating others.  This is where your example becomes extremely important.
Your Interactions with Your Child
One of the key times that your child observes your behavior is when you are interacting with her.  When Jamillah has a rude response to everything you have to say to her, how do you handle her disrespectful behavior?  Do you shout back at her, spitting out hurtful words?  Maybe you lash out at her, smacking her a few times on her face and head to let her know who’s really in charge.  Or perhaps you slam the door as you retreat to your room after a verbal battle with your daughter.
If your child observes you behaving in such ways when you are upset, she will view these behaviors as acceptable responses during her own periods of rage.  Keep this important point in mind when you’re irritated  and interacting with your child.  Consciously think to yourself, I am my child’s example.
Disputes with Husband and Wife
You probably already know the next occasion I’m about to bring up.  Yep, that’s right. . . your interactions with your spouse.  This is one of those interactions that your children have a heightened alertness with.  During situations when you and your husband are having differences, how do you handle your disagreements?  Do you fly off the handle venting out abusive words to your husband?  It’s not unheard of for wives to be on the aggressive end physically, either.  Be aware that your children obey your every action, as the saying goes.

Seek Help
If you find that you have a problem controlling your own emotions when you’re upset, take steps to work on this issue.  Being patient during troubling times is not something that can be feigned.  This is a quality that comes with practice and fear of Allah.  Perhaps you can search the internet for information on anger management.  There’s loads of it out there.  Plenty of books from the library or bookstore have information on the subject, as well.  You can also enroll in an anger management class.  Look them up online for your area.
Inspiration from Quran
Listen to lectures on the rewards and benefits of being patient.  There are numerous ayat in Quran extolling the benefits of being patient:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اصْبِرُواْ وَصَابِرُواْ وَرَابِطُواْ وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
Ø  You who believe! Endure and be more patient . . .” (3:200)

Ø  "And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun (the patient)".  (2:155)

وَلَمَن صَبَرَ وَغَفَرَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَمِنْ عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ
Peer Up
Another way to help yourself become more patient is to frequently intermingle with sisters or family members who are known for exhibiting self-control when experiencing difficulties.  By interacting with these types of people, you will pick up their good habits, insha’Allah.
Make Dua
Remember what the Prophet, (saw) said about how to protect yourself from becoming angry: In his Musnad, Al-Hafiz Abu Ya`la Ahmad bin `Ali bin Al-Muthanna Al-Mawsili reported that Ubayy bin Ka`b said, "Two men disputed with each other in the presence of the Messenger of Allah and the nose of one of them became swollen because of extreme anger. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said,
(I know of some words that if he said them, what he feels will go away, 'I seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Satan.')''
Along with the above words, remember in general to ask Allah to help you to get better at being patient.  For Allah is the one who grants patience to whom He wants.
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: The Prophet (saw) said, “. . . Allah will give him patience, and no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience . . . ."
(Bukhari, Muslim)

Do You Make This Discipline Mistake? By: Grandma Jeddah

One of the greatest mistakes we can make when disciplining our children is failing to acknowledge their good behavior. Complimenting your child for appropriate behavior is one of the most effective ways of getting your child to repeat doing the things you want him to do. It sounds easy, but it seems to be one of the most difficult practices for parents to master.  It’s so easy for us to find fault with our children.  But when they behave well, we fail to praise them and show our pleasure. How would you feel if from morning to night you had to listen to constant complaints-- "Don’t do this . . . Don’t do that . . . Didn't I tell you not to . . .  Stop it . . . " You’d probably feel angry, unsure of yourself and agitated. Not to mention you'd frequently pretend not to hear the speaker’s voice.
When your child is quietly content, playing with his toys or getting along with his younger sibling, you are hesitant to disturb the peace. You are so happy to relax and  take a breather from all  the usual commotion, you tend not to compliment your child to let him know how pleased you are with him for making salat on time,  cleaning his room, not playing ball in the house, or getting along with his brother.  But it’s essential to switch from this pattern if you want to see more of this favored behavior in the future.  So true is the saying--an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Commending your child for suitable behavior necessities retraining your thought patterns.  You have to actually look for good deeds and behavior from your child and praise him for it. We all like our efforts acknowledged.  Our kids do too.
When your son gets off the computer next time without you having to repeat  yourself, let him know you appreciate his promptness. When you compliment him, he will feel more inclined toward obeying you next time.  You might also find an improvement in other areas of his behavior as an unexpected side benefit. Keep this useful tool in mind when trying to correct your child’s behavior.

Summertime Science Boredom Blaster By: Grandma Jeddah

“I’m bored!”  “There’s nothing to do!”  No parent wants to hear these common phrases spurt from their child’s mouth. With school almost out and several months ahead with free time, you might hear them often. Of course you can’t be, and shouldn’t be, the sole means of entertainment for your children.  But you can guide them and show them ways of how to entertain themselves. One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is the ability to self-direct himself when he’s discontented.   This can help prevent him from teasing his younger brother to alleviate his boredom and get your attention—all be it negative attention.
Teach your kids this never-fail-to-please science experiment. All you need are two cooking ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard right now. Once you show your kids how to perform the experiment, they’ll ask you again, and again, if they can do it on their own.
X-ray Vision Volcano
¼ cup baking soda
½ cup vinegar
1 drinking bottle 24oz. with label removed
1 baking dish

Set drinking bottle on baking dish
Pour baking soda into bottle
Hold bottle steady
Pour vinegar in bottle
Watch your volcano explode!
On their own, have children add other household ingredients: dish soap, food coloring salt etc.

Keep Them Busy this Summer By: Grandma Jeddah

What have you planned for your kids this summer?  If you haven’t already, now is a good time to get started. One way to maintain proper discipline in your home is to keep your kids busy.  Having constructive activities throughout the summer can help avoid excessive arguing and fighting among siblings.  It can also prevent them from getting involved in mischievous activities in order to alleviate their boredom.
In the next few blogs, I’ll mention a couple of fun and entertaining activities you can get your children involved in.  You can do them all in your home, and they cost little or no money.   The main ingredients are you, your kids and a smile.
Home Olympics
Home Olympics is a fantastic game to play with your 7-year-olds and up.  It helps them stay in shape while they remain in the house during those scorching summer days.
Have your child choose a day from the end of the month to hold the Home Olympics. Write the date down on the calendar.  You can even make lively posters to remind everyone in the home of the big day.
Have your children practice the below athletic routines regularly 3 – 5 times a week.  This will strengthen their muscles so they can be in top shape for the big event at the end of the month.
These are the activities your children will do, insha’Allah or you can choose your own.

1.      In her bedroom, jump 50 Jumping jacks.
2.      In the hallway, do 20 push-ups.
3.      In the kitchen, run in place 50 times.
4.      In the second bedroom, perform 20 sit-ups.
5.      In the dining room, dip 10 leg squats.

Time your children at the end of all five games.  Each day they should try to beat their previous record.
On the day of the Home Olympics, decorate your home for the special event with balloons and streamers if you like.  After the games have been played, have a small party or special treats available for all Home Olympics participants. Everyone is a winner, because they compete against their own previous scores not one another.

Go for the fun!
